What Is the Canadian Dental Care Plan?
The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal government program that provides dental coverage to eligible Canadians who don't have access to private dental insurance. Launched in 2024, it's one of the largest expansions of dental coverage in Canadian history.
The plan is administered by Sun Life on behalf of the Government of Canada and provides coverage for essential dental services including preventive care, basic restorative treatments, and dentures — at little or no cost to eligible recipients.
At West 17th Avenue Dental Care, we are fully registered CDCP providers. We handle all the direct billing to Sun Life, so your appointment experience is simple and stress-free. Bring your member card, and we'll take care of the rest.

CDCP Questions Answered
How do I apply for the Canadian Dental Care Plan?
Most eligible Canadians are enrolled automatically based on their income tax returns. You'll receive a welcome letter from Sun Life (the plan administrator) with your coverage details and a member card. If you haven't received information but believe you qualify, visit the Government of Canada's CDCP page or call 1-833-537-2337.
How does billing work at your clinic?
Once you have your CDCP coverage, simply bring your member card to your appointment. We direct-bill Sun Life on your behalf — you only pay any applicable co-payment or services not covered by the plan. We'll explain exactly what's covered before any treatment begins.
What is a co-payment under CDCP?
Most eligible Canadians pay a co-payment based on family income. Families earning under $70,000 have no co-payment (100% covered). Those earning between $70,000–$79,999 pay 40% co-payment; $80,000–$89,999 pay 60%. Your member card will show your co-payment level.
Does CDCP cover orthodontics or cosmetic dentistry?
CDCP currently focuses on essential dental services — preventive care, basic restorative treatments, and dentures. Cosmetic procedures (veneers, whitening, Invisalign) and orthodontics are not covered. We'll always clarify what's covered before treatment.
I have private insurance AND qualify for CDCP. Can I use both?
No — CDCP is specifically for Canadians without private dental insurance. If you have employer-provided or individual dental insurance, you are not eligible for the Canadian Dental Care Plan.
Is the Canadian Dental Care Plan the same as the Children's Oral Health Initiative?
No. The CDCP is a broader federal program for eligible Canadians of all ages. There are also separate provincial programs for children. Our team can help you understand which programs your family may qualify for.
